SURVIVING OR LIVING?

With the advent of coronavirus pandemic, the world all over has really changed! I wonder whether the status of the earth will really go back to where it was. Before the corona virus pandemic, a good number of people were working-some were employed others were running their own businesses, the economy was at least good and the cost of living was affordable to many, generally worldwide. Everything changed drastically with the advent of the pandemic of corona virus: many people lost their jobs; businesses went down and the economy severely gone down making life difficult. Many people who lost their employment in various firms and institutions resorted to run small businesses but despite these efforts, the profit margin was still very low and even as we speak there is still no big difference.

This has made livelihood just another puzzle all together for instance, a family living town or city would try to balance to satisfy every day needs: put food on the table, cater for her bills like water, electricity, rent, childcare and school cost and the like. To budget for all these with just a little amount of money on hand, is just hectic!

Millions of people are at risk of falling into extreme poverty world wide and this has been clearly seen by the new media coverage globally just to mention a few like twitter for example #CostOfLivingCrisis which has been trending recently.

The status of the earth has really changed and if it will return to its originally status before the pandemic, then much work would have to be done.

STRUGGLE FOR DIGITAL LITERACY IN KENYA

Every president in any country would always want to leave a legacy in his regime after his term of reign is over. Taking the case of President Uhuru Kenyatta in his first term as a president of the Republic of Kenya he came up with a laptop project in education sector with a view of enhancing digital literacy in education. The project was launched in Primary schools in June 2013, the president received the support of the Microsoft too and this drew a lot of expectations among Kenyans.

However, as we speak this project has failed due to a number of factors such as infrastructure, cost of implementation among others. The star news paper featured the reasons for the failure of this project https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2019-03-22-why-uhurus-flagship-laptop-project-crashed/

According to my view, this was a very wonderful project as it was going to bring up Digital literate citizens decreasing the gap in digital divide. This is one of the aims of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) has it is working towards providing effective learning which is one of the tool in fighting against poverty in the Globe since knowledge is power.

The failure of this project attracted public discussion too, something which I think should be well taken into consideration and be revived when appropriate measures will have been put in place since it will really help in providing effective learning, bridging the gap in digital inequalities and in turn help fight poverty. Proper planning will also help enable e-learning for instance, when the Kenyan government closed schools due to covid-19 platforms such as google meet, Kenet enabled e-learning. Social media platforms such as whatsapp also were used to share past exam papers among students and other learning materials.

THE MENACE OF THE LAND ISSUE IN KENYA

Land Issue has become a major problem in Kenya which the government which take more action in it for the over whole wellbeing of its citizens. With regard to the proportion of total adult population with secure tenure rights to land with legally recognized documentation there has been a lot of problems.

There has been a lot of conflicts between families, people and private bodies and the citizens and the governmental bodies with regard to land; who owns it. Brothers have turned against one another, families and clans even to the point of shedding blood. This alone tells a lot of how imperative land is to the people’s lives. Recently 36-year old man killed his brother in February 2022 during the Covid-19 pandemic just because of land, this is just one of the many instances.

Does it mean that there’s less land in Kenya such that you have to fight for it or people are just greedy to have it all? It’s important to note that social media platforms like twitter, Facebook have also contributed to fight against land grabbing and campaigned on peaceful resolutions on land conflicts.

Statistics by National Crime Research Centre on Situational Analysis Of Land Related Crimes In Kenya by Dickson Gitonga Njiru Joash Rono show that According to the reports from the agencies, most perpetrators of land use related crimes as recorded from the complainants were; individuals which had 402 cases, family/ relatives which were 29 case, community groups/ neighbors which were 23 cases, Squatters which were 20 cases and land brokers/ land fraudsters which were 19 cases respectively and formed the number of complaints which were above 10 case.

Land grabbing has also been on the rise, for instance where one with power especially the capitalist takes over land belonging to those regarded as weak in society especially the widows, orphans, poor etc. This has been so easy for them since they believe that they can do nothing to regain back their land. Some people have been moved from their land simply because they do not have legal documents over them or having fake documents, does it mean that there are no proper mechanisms laid down by the government for people to have proper documentation over the same or they are people in government who have personal gains and in so doing are in the business of providing fake documentation? Such cases have rendered others homeless thus contributing to increase in the level of poverty!

It’s really significance that the government is intervening to see to it that people get their rights to own property in this case land by ensuring that they have proper documentation on the land they possess. The government has made this easy by facilitating the process of giving out land title deeds to the land right land owners.

When more action is taken by the government with regard to land then there will be significance steps fight against poverty in the nation thus contributing also to nation building.

HOW SHOULD THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT DEAL WITH POVERTY?

With the overwhelming rate of unemployment both in Kenya and Globally, the government of Kenya has been doing all it can to help raise the standards of living by giving out loans to millions of Kenya. The media has really helped the government to achieve this by numerous adverts on loans through the digital platforms especially through the digital televisions and this has been made possible since many people have smartphones which can access internet thus accessing the digital broadcast for example, citizen digital. The government in doing this, in turn tries to fight against Global extreme poverty which is one of the UN’s Global goals. In my view, I think the Government should come up with numerous job opportunities to create job for many people which will really help raise the living standards of many and built the nation, what do you this?

THE UGLY ULTIMATE OF PROCRASTINATION BY STUDENTS.

Most students like the habit of procrastinating and this sometimes land them in terrible situations. This is my observation in the learning institution of Moi University, Eldoret-Kenya, for the last two and a half years.

Learning is a process and require determination to excel, majority of the students after the lectures plan on doing personal studies and research to understand more on the subject taught. This personal ample initiative shades off when the students say they’ll do it later and embark on some things which does not add value to their studies but instead waste time. Some go to the library to study and after some few minutes of going through very brief notes, they get into their phones, look at some WhatsApp messages, get into YouTube to check on perhaps an academic content little do they know that these things kidnaps the mind if you aren’t careful. They then end up chatting with friends, watching lots of YouTube videos some of which does not relate to the studies undertaken and this makes it so easy with the free wireless local area network (wifi). They then schedule it to a later time or date which in most cases get forgotten and unattended to.

When exam peeps that’s when they realize they have a lot of workload just because of pushing academic work ahead without logical reasons. Since doing comprehensive work on a single subject is close to impossible with the little time available. They end up having little knowledge, incompetence, cheating in exams, poor grades, some of them being suspended for a thousand academic year which is another hell!

The remedy to this is to put your priorities in order and to be absolutely self-discipline.

IN PURSUIT OF A LEADER

Students of Moi University flooded the streets of the institution aggressively campaigning for the candidates of their choice. This ran through from first to sixth of February, 2020.

The campaign teams for the various candidates were out on the streets of Moi with whistles, bicycles, handbills and posters. These teams were going door to door, hostel after hostel and anywhere where the students were gathered selling the manifestos of the candidates just to win their hearts.

During campaigns the students are so much overwhelmed and so do all sorts of crazy things alongside the campaign and this video tells it all; https://www.facebook.com/100046032369467/posts/124462832431462/?app=fbl

MOI UNIVERSITY DECIDES

Students Center, Moi university in Eldoret, Kenya.

Moi University Main Campus, Eldoret-Kenya, holds its major students election on 7th February 2020 at the very venue.

As it is a human right to choose leaders of one’s choice, the institution of Moi allowed their students to exercise this freedom without any inconvenience. This follows after a series of campaigns by the candidates who showed interest in the various posts, they were heavily backed up with their fans who were not left behind. The campaigns have been ongoing all over the institution and its environs where the students reside. On this D-day, thousands of students storm their respective polling stations as outlined by the students’ electoral body, to elect the leaders of their choice. There were three polling stations located at different venues within the institution. Policemen were also deployed in the institution to maintain law and order as such events are prone to clashes.

The outcome of the election will be on the decision by the students, the governance thereafter whether good or bad ought not to be a blame of any other person other than the people concerned as such scenario of the public crying out to the leaders for poor performance have been witnessed in the country by in some regions and beyond.

Why Campus guys abandon their girlfriends after pregnancy?

Eighty percent of the girls who get pregnant in campuses get abandoned by their boyfriends. Due to the unplanned responsibilities to come, the guys walk out of their lives claiming to have financial strains. They deny the very people whom they “really cherished and love”.

The big question is who will support these girls after the boyfriends abandon them; will they run to their friends or the parents? Majority of the guys point fingers at these girls accusing them of having many affairs and that they are not the ones responsible for the pregnancy. This might be the case or not especially if the lady was genuinely faithful to the guy. This kind of statement may be used by majority of the guys as a way of getting rid of the lady, even if they know they are the ones responsible for the pregnancy just to evade responsibilities. Some do so to maintain their reputation as gentlemen among their peers and uphold their self-esteem especially if they are these kind of people who are fond of this habit undercover. Most of the girls then end up getting frustrated. This is a major challenge to these campus girls because telling their parents is another tale. It becomes a hard decision to choose whether to abort or not. A question to be asked is whether these guys are ever guilty for abandoning the girls they once cared for. If there is such guilt how do they manage to survive such guilt, how do they manage to date other girls and repeat the same thing after pregnancy occur?

This is what Faith, a blogger, had to say about Pregnancies

On other hand one of the blogger was trying to look into the leading factor to these pregnancies.

WHY SOME STUDENTS MISS LECTURES?

This is the situation of the roads in a Centre popularly known as stage outside Moi University, Eldoret, during rainy seasons where some of the students choose to reside despite the fact that there are enough hostels inside the University to accommodate them.

The roads usually have thick mud especially during rainy seasons and it makes it difficult for movement by the businessmen around and the students who go for their lectures. Having in mind that Eldoret usually receive very heavy rains at any time either by day or night and this does happen in a good part of the night. Now imagining of waking up early as a student for lectures and just to interact with a lot of mud on the way to the university is just a discouraging factor having in mind that personal grooming is key since they are going to interact with their other fellows who reside inside the university where there are no mud. Furthermore they claim that it easily contribute to the wear and tear of their shoes. This make some students to opt for missing the lectures rather than to face the challenge with a mind of creating time to be at the same page with the rest.

This has raise an alarm but unfortunately the University management cannot work on the same since it’s a private land. The decision now lies on the hands of the student whether to reside inside or outside the campus.

BOOMING HOTEL BUSINESS IN ELDORET

Hotel business owners around Moi University Main Campus in Eldoret now count big profit margin as they receive large number of customers beginning end of last year, 2019.

This was after the university management banned cooking of food in the hostels by the student. The university took this direction for the safety of the students since there are no facilities to give room to this in the hostels. Cooking in the hostels by the students has been an ongoing thing despite the fact that the university has mess halls but unfortunately they were underutilized due to one reason or the other as given by the students. This has forced majority of the students to have their meals in the nearby hotels as the university look on the way forward to better their provision of meals to their students at an affordable cost with facilities too to accommodate the large of students more conveniently. The photo depicts the situation in most of the hotels within the campus; they are usually full especially during the time most people take meals. The profit made by these business premises can easily prompt an investor to venture into this.
